"I
grew up in Nebraska where trees were sparse and the view was ten miles to the horizon. I live now on Vashon Island in the Puget Sound, but I am still attracted to that distant view, and that feeling of openness and unlimited possibilities that it suggests. I paint paintings of places that I know, that I have seen everyday. I hope for a sense of recognition from my viewers.
I enjoy the effect of sunlight and how it organizes and simplifies space, throwing large areas into shadow and warming the colors. Sunlight can transform an ordinary scene into a scene of drama and power. I paint to capture that transformation, and if I am successful, the viewer will also feel that excitement.
I often paint on location, but do the majority of my work in the studio, working from sketches or photographs that I have taken. I rework the photos on the computer, sketching directly and reshuffling elements digitally. I sketch the final image in watercolor pencil on hardwood panels or canvas. I draw and paint in thin acrylic washes at first, but finish the painting with thicker and more opaque paint.
